My interest in facial surgery began at Yale University, where I discovered the facial reconstruction work of Sir Harold Gillies, regarded as the father of modern plastic surgery. I have always been drawn to art: studying faces, their harmony, their beauty, and the possibility of shaping them with precision to improve each patient’s life. I owe that artistic eye above all to Dr. Pedro Arquero, my mentor in facial plastic surgery, trained at the school of Prof. Ivo Pitanguy in Brazil.

A rotation in Maxillofacial Surgery at Quirón Salud Hospital, with Dr. Guerra and Dr. Acero, confirmed my calling for this specialty, and a month of medical and dental volunteering in Nepal marked my early years of training. Since then I have trained at leading centers such as the University of Hong Kong, Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires — as an AO CMF fellow —, Charité in Berlin, and Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, alongside the MIT linQ IDEA² program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

I currently serve as attending Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and Facial Plastic Surgeon at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (Barcelona), under the direction of Dr. Jorge Pamias Romero, Head of the Department and another of my mentors, and collaborate closely at the Instituto Maxilofacial at Centro Médico Teknon with Prof. Dr. Federico Hernández-Alfaro, one of the world’s foremost authorities in orthognathic and facial surgery. During my residency I served as Spain’s National Trainee Representative to the EACMFS and as the specialty’s representative on Spain’s National Specialty Commission for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, under the Ministry of Health (2023-2025).

That same international training now feeds two preclinical research lines I lead: tissue engineering for mandibular reconstruction, and the treatment of BRAF-positive ameloblastoma. In parallel, I am the author of two surgical patents and seven indexed scientific publications, focused on technical innovation and improving outcomes in oral and maxillofacial surgery. I wrote the Lifting Surgery chapter of the reference manual published by the Spanish Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (SECOM CyC, 2025), and completed the EACMFS Facial Plastic Surgery postgraduate program (2025-2026).

All that technical and scientific rigor serves, for me, a single purpose: the person in front of me. Combining public hospital practice with my work at the Instituto Maxilofacial lets me bring together the rigor of academic medicine with close, personalized care. Being a facial plastic surgeon isn’t just about mastering a technique: it’s about supporting each patient before, during and after the procedure, explaining clearly what will happen and why. I know many people arrive at the consultation with doubts or some fear of surgery, and my goal is for them to leave reassured, having understood their case and trusting they are in good hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an oral & maxillofacial surgeon and a dentist?

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a physician who, after medical school, trains for several more years as a hospital specialist. We diagnose and surgically treat conditions of the mouth, face and neck — from a complex tooth extraction to orthognathic surgery or reconstruction after a tumor. Dentists and maxillofacial surgeons work closely together, and many patients arrive referred by their dentist or physician.

What does orthognathic surgery involve, and who is it for?

It's the surgical correction of jaw position when a malocclusion or facial imbalance can't be resolved with orthodontics alone. It's planned jointly with the orthodontist and, in my practice, with 3D digital planning ahead of surgery.

How long do facelift results last, and what do they look like?

A well-planned facelift typically holds its effect for 7 to 10 years, though natural aging continues afterward. My goal isn't to pull the skin as tight as possible, but to work on the deeper facial planes to restore firmness without changing the patient's features or leaving an operated look. That's the approach I set out in the Lifting Surgery chapter of the SECOM CyC reference manual.

What is free-flap reconstruction, and when is it needed?

It's a microsurgical technique that transfers tissue — skin, bone or muscle — from elsewhere in the body, reconnecting its blood vessels under a microscope, to reconstruct areas of the face or neck after tumor removal or severe trauma. It's the most complex option within facial reconstruction; I trained specifically in it at centers including Hong Kong, Buenos Aires and Charité Berlin, and I currently research tissue engineering for mandibular reconstruction at VHIR.

Can facial paralysis still be treated surgically even if it happened a while ago?

Yes. Treatment depends more on the cause and the condition of the muscles and nerves than on how much time has passed. In recent paralysis, dynamic techniques that reactivate movement are sometimes enough; in long-standing cases, once the muscle is no longer functional, I turn to static techniques or muscle transfers. I trained in both approaches at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, one of the world's leading centers for facial reanimation.

What's the process, from the first visit to surgery?

In the first visit I review the reason for consultation, the exam, and any imaging already available or needed. Based on that I explain the diagnosis and treatment options. If surgery is indicated, the process includes a planning phase (often involving prior orthodontics) and, finally, the surgery and postoperative follow-up.

Is recovery from facial or oral surgery very painful?

Pain is usually milder than most patients expect: it's generally well controlled with scheduled medication in the first few days, without needing opioids. What does vary by procedure is swelling and the time needed to return to normal life — from about a week for minor surgery to several weeks for a complex reconstruction. I provide written aftercare instructions and stay available throughout recovery.

Where can I see you for a consultation, and do I need a referral?

I hold private consultations at the Instituto Maxilofacial at Centro Médico Teknon (Barcelona), where you can book directly without a referral; if you're referred by your dentist or doctor, bring any reports or tests you have. As an attending surgeon at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, I also see public-system patients through the hospital's usual channels.
